Split System Air Conditioners
In split system air conditioning systems part of the air conditioning system is located outside – this is referred to as a condenser or condensing unit. The condenser has control wires and copper tubes that lead inside to the air handler or furnace. An air conditioning air handler and evaporator coil is located inside the house over, under or beside the indoor unit. The air conditioning system style gets the name “Split System” from the fact that the two component parts are “split” into indoor and outdoor sections.
The air conditioning condenser (outdoor portion) will normally be located on the ground beside the house or on the roof. The indoor unit and coil (air handler, furnace or heater) is usually located in a basement, crawl space, closet or attic and is connected to a duct system that circulates the air through the home. Indoor air hanclers and furnaces may be mounted horizontally or vertically to accommodate different installation requirements.
